This beautifully shot documentary explores both the lives and the catches of the passionate sport fishers who revel in the beauty of Plum Island while trying to land “the big one.” The Fishing Festival events begin at 7:00 pm, with the one hour film showing at 7:30 pm, and a free wine and appetizer reception immediately following. Tickets are $10. In addition to the one hour film and reception, those attending with be able to see photographic displays of many of the legendary fish caught on the island, chosen from the extensive collection at Surfland Bait and Tackle. Surfland’s own legend, Kay Moulton and daughters Martha and Liz will be speaking prior to the film and at the reception, answering questions and sharing their favorite tips for the upcoming season. Local sport fishing businesses like Plum Island Kayak and Atlantic Aquasports will have tables in the lobby with information and special offers, and your ticket includes a free raffle for fishing items, large and small. What many who have viewed the film love about “Reel People: Fishermen of Plum Island” is that Director James Waldron has a gift for getting people to talk naturally about their passion for fishing. Interviews with old timers bring the history of fishing on Plum Island alive, especially when they are interspersed with actual footage of those same men capturing the elusive 50 pounders 50 years ago. Fishing is different around the island now, but there are as many hard core fishermen as ever. You’ll meet the infamous “eel slinger” and the most passionate of the passionate, but also those who simply enjoy a day outdoors, being with their families and the quiet beauty of Plum Island that is, in itself, a star of this breathtaking film. And of course, they all converge at Surfland’s Bait and Tackle, the Mecca of the local fishing community, and the heart of this film. Special guests at the reception, in addition to the Moultons, include Don Lappin, Jim Cowhig, Dave Roberts, and Joe Brotz (the eel slinger) who are all featured in the film; Bob Smith who supplied vintage photographs for the exhibit and film; Jim Chase of the Seacoast Science Center who is versed in the Plum Island marsh habitat. All will be happy to answer any questions from festival guests about the history of fishing at Plum Island and their own perspectives on the upcoming fishing season.
